Finally, exercise I don’t mind doing…

Working out and getting in shape has been a lifelong battle for me. It seems I’m allergic to the pain of exercise. I haven’t been diagnosed yet, but yup,I’m pretty sure that’s what it is.

I was in the navy for 6 years (yes, me, I know!). After my time in the navy I went to college as a Marine-Corps option NROTC student (double gasp!) Do you know why I never became a Marine Corps officer? The running! Yes, the Military’s obsession with being in tip-top shape kept me out of becoming a Marine Corps officer. Well, that and the fact that the Marine Corps lifestyle would be completely opposite of who I am as a person, but that’s a post for another day.

Anywhoo, I have joined the YMCA at least 3 different occasions over the past 6 years in (2 different states, mind you) with the determination to ‘get in shape’ only to waste hundreds of dollars in membership fees. I have tried Zumba which I like, but find it hard to follow choreographed steps…I just wanna dance!  Tried  African Dance…same issue as Zumba, but with the expectation that since I’m African I’m supposed to be a natural at it, NOT!  Tried Water Aerobics..erm, black women + hair + water…need I say more?  Tried Spinning…also known as torture while riding a bike to really horrible techno music.  Yoga: this  I like for relaxation and good stretching.  Calisthenics, and Pilates: C & P, the torture twins.  Jump Rope: I have bad knees. And of course, the much despised running, which leaves me with shin splints and is also really bad for my knees.

I’m not remotely close to being dangerously overweight, but 3 children later I do have somewhat of a spare tire. I’ve always been in pretty good health, and I have a good diet, but I’m starting to feel the effects of getting older: less energy, needing to take naps, muscle aches etc. All this led me to step up my desire to find  a way to get more exercise into my life.  I know how important it is to my health and well being. I plan on being here for my children and their children and so on. I want to be fly and fabulous into my 70’s and 80’s. I plan on maintaining my youthful looks, plus I really want to look better in my clothes. The only way to do this is to exercise.

I have recently started fitness-walking and I think this might be something I can really stick with. I walk about 4 miles a day through a beautiful park into an equally gorgeous neighborhood.  This also doubles as my me-time to unwind. It’s my time to pull back from whatever current project has me disappearing down the rabbit-hole.  It is low-impact, doesn’t hurt nearly as bad as the rest and I still feel like I got it in. For these reasons I enjoy power-walking.  I’m hoping this one sticks because I really like it.

How do you get exercise and what are some of your most memorable attempts at working out?

I’m a mom of 4 and I’m a bit the opposite. I schedule my life around my workouts! Ok, maybe that’s a bit dramatic but running, lifting weights and cycling are essential to my well being. My first attempts at exercise were Jane Fonda & Richard Simmons videos. Hilarious, in retrospect.

    Diggin’ your site/blog!

Thanks T (that was my navy nickname, actually). I had it backwards, I thought I was supposed to schedule exercise around my life, lol. I still remember Richard Simmons and his funny shorts!
